Tŷ Hafan Children’s Hospice: design of the illustrated garden map for National Open Gardens open day
Tŷ Hafan Children’s Hospice, based in Sully on the Vale of Glamorgan coast, provides round-the-clock care and support for children with life-shortening conditions and their families. Its private hospice gardens, set against the backdrop of the Bristol Channel, are a carefully tended space for play, reflection and togetherness — cared for since 2000 by a dedicated team of volunteer gardeners.
On Saturday 13th June, Tŷ Hafan opened these usually private gardens to the public for one day only, taking part in the National Open Gardens Scheme. Visitors could explore areas including the Woodland Walk, the Memorial Garden, the Sensory Gardens and the teenagers’ Founder’s Legacy Den, with light refreshments and a plant sale on the day.
Tŷ Hafan’s marketing team asked me to design an A4 leaflet to hand out to visitors as they arrived. The brief was to help people find their way around the grounds and understand the story behind each area, in a format that felt warm and welcoming rather than a plain site plan.
I designed an illustrated map of the gardens for one side of the leaflet, with a numbered key on the reverse describing each of the twelve garden areas — from the Woodland Walk and Racetrack through to the Memorial Garden and Sensory Gardens — alongside practical visitor information on wheelchair access and photography guidance to protect the privacy of the children and families Tŷ Hafan supports.

I’m proud to have been asked to support the marketing team at such an important local charity, and to play a small part in a special open day that let visitors see and understand the beautiful space that means so much to the children and families Tŷ Hafan cares for.
If your organisation needs a leaflet, map or other print design for an event or campaign, get in touch — you can see more of my work in the portfolio.
