Legally Flushed: book design and Amazon publishing for Imogen Robins

Legally Flushed is the movement Imogen Robins, Barrister at Law, set up to support women in the legal profession. I designed the Legally Flushed logo and website a while back, so when Imogen decided to put her message into print, she asked me to design the book cover and internal layout and get it ready for Amazon.

Her first book, Legally Flushed: How Women in Law Can Reclaim Their Power, Their Voice, and Their Future, is now available in paperback on Amazon.

About the book

Imogen writes for every woman in law who knows “the moment”, the point where you realise you can no longer outrun yourself. Her argument is direct: the legal profession was not built for women, and it cannot afford to keep losing them to bias, burnout, motherhood, menopause and the pressure to be perfect in every domain at once.

The book is about what comes next: reclaiming what you were told to suppress, leading without apology and building a legal life that is genuinely, sustainably joyful. In Imogen’s words, it is about becoming legally flushed: filled, fuelled and flushed with power, purpose, prosperity and connection.

Proceeds from the book go to Azalea, a small organisation that supports women caught in commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking.

The brief

Imogen had a clear picture of the style she wanted, and the book had to sit comfortably alongside the Legally Flushed brand that already existed on the website, social media and printed materials. She also needed the finished files to pass Amazon’s technical checks first time, so the book could be listed without delay.

Cover and layout design

The cover carries the Legally Flushed identity through: the purple palette, the distinctive display lettering used for the title and the logo at its heart, set against a soft, atmospheric photograph. The back cover holds Imogen’s blurb in a clean, readable setting with room for the ISBN barcode Amazon adds at print stage.

Inside, I laid out the text for the paperback format Imogen chose (5.5 x 8.5 inches), choosing typefaces and spacing that make the book comfortable to read while keeping the same character as the cover.

Preparing the artwork for Amazon

Publishing through Amazon’s print-on-demand platform means the artwork must meet exact specifications. The spine width is calculated from the final page count and paper stock, the cover needs the correct bleed and safe zones, and both the cover and interior files have to be exported to Amazon’s print-ready PDF requirements. I handled all of this so the files were accepted first time and the book went live.

This kind of publication and print design is something I have done for many years, from annual reports and brochures to books like this one.

Helping clients become published authors

I was introduced to Imogen by my long-standing client Joy Ogeh-Hutfield, for whom I design, develop and host the Joy Transformation Coach website. Over the years I have also helped Joy publish a range of her own books, which you can see at joytransformationcoach.com/books. Thank you, Joy, for the recommendation.

If you have a book in you and want it to look as professional as the big publishers’ titles, I can take care of the cover, the interior layout and the technical preparation for Amazon, and tie it all in with your website and brand. Get in touch to talk about your book.
